CanNor Invests in Nunavut Businesses

IQALUIT, NUNAVUT--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2010) - Nunavut businesses will benefit from a workshop and associated learning materials designed to increase their knowledge about trade show participation.

The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, announced an investment of $88,648 to create a trade show preparation workshop and guide. These business tools have been developed and will be delivered by the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce.

"Our Government is proud to invest in initiatives that enable Northern businesses to grow," said Minister Duncan, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. "This initiative will allow Nunavut businesses to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by trade shows and to become more successful."

"CanNor's investment in this initiative will help create thriving northern businesses, which will support a sustainable and dynamic territorial economy and contribute to the long term prosperity of Nunavut communities," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health.

"All businesses and small and medium enterprises in particular, need to take advantage of every opportunity they have to expand their contacts and sales opportunities," said Chris West, President of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce. "The workshop and materials that are being developed will help ensure that they have all the necessary marketing materials ready and they are well prepared to attend trade shows in the territory, across Canada and around the world."

The Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce has developed a trade show preparation workshop and guide. The first workshop will occur during the Nunavut Economic Developers Association's Annual General Conference in Baker Lake, starting November 15, 2010. This workshop will provide training to economic development officers who will take this knowledge to their communities and use it to help businesses better prepare for attending trade shows.

The federal investment in this program is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.

SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor, which is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
