CANSO and MITRE Launch Training to Implement Aviation System Block Upgrades

MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - March 03, 2014) - The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) and The MITRE Corporation (MITRE) announced a worldwide, comprehensive training program on the implementation of ICAO's Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBU), the strategic framework for future air navigation technology and procedure improvements.

The training, for air navigation service providers (ANSPs), civil aviation authorities, and industry partners involved in aviation system modernization, is designed to provide members of the global aviation community with a common understanding of the ASBU methodology and how best to implement the modules.

Speaking in Madrid on the eve of World ATM Congress, CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, said, "The Aviation System Block Upgrades are a vital step towards helping to achieve our vision of seamless airspace globally. ASBUs are complex to execute so it is important that we facilitate and guide States and air navigation service providers to implement them effectively. CANSO has already worked with The MITRE Corporation to produce an easy to understand document, Introduction to ASBU Modules, and I am delighted that we can complement this with this essential five-day course for States, air navigation service providers, and industry partners. The course is indispensable for those that are involved in ATM systems planning and modernisation programmes."

The ASBU methodology is a strategic planning framework developed by States and industry to ensure that ATM improvement programs are effectively harmonized, that safety is enhanced, and that future aviation efficiency and environmental performance improvements can be achieved. It is the result of comprehensive consultations with a wide range of aviation stakeholders and provides industry-wide transparency and essential investment certainty for aircraft operators, airports, ANSPs and manufacturers.

MITRE will offer a five-day course as a quality service from CANSO called Methodology and Best Practices for ASBU Implementation. This interactive and practical course will advise decision makers on how to select, prioritize and implement ASBU capabilities; how to identify gaps between current ATM capabilities and ASBU capabilities; how to develop a business case to support investment decisions; and other key implementation issues.

"We are pleased to collaborate with CANSO to offer this course that furthers the goal of global aviation harmonization," said Lillian Zarrelli Ryals, senior vice president and general manager of MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development.
