Cantech Investment Conference Announces Mike Wekerle as Keynote

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Jan. 6, 2015) - The Cantech Investment Conference ("Cantech 15") is pleased to announce Difference Capital CEO and CBC's newest Dragon Michael Wekerle as one of several keynotes at Canada's largest tech conference, which will take place January 15th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

"I'm very pleased to welcome Michael Wekerle to Cantech 15," said Cantech Letter Founding Editor Nick Waddell. "Difference Capital has played a key role in the early part of the sector rotation to technology. Michael was an early leader in the space, and has made important investments into some of the Canada's very best private technology companies."

Michael Wekerle is considered Bay Street's top trader in the business. He is an energetic and enthusiastic team leader who understands the value of motivating his team. Bill Holland, CEO of CI Financial, describes Wekerle as "the best, a friend of mine who has been on the street 30 years described him as a trading savant. There is no one who can put a buyer and seller together better than this guy".

Michael Wekerle began his career at First Marathon, a Toronto-based brokerage firm. The company was a trading powerhouse for its size; Wekerle was a key player due to his sharp memory and his ability to find harmonious matches between buyers and sellers. His particular forte was liability trading. In discussing Michael Wekerle, Seymour Shulich, a wealthy investor and philanthropist, says "I've never seen a guy who can keep more deal s in his head than that guy. I'm not even close. He must have somewhere between the number 25 and 50 deals in his head at any given time. He is the best I know."

In 1995, Wekerle became a Partner and co-founded Griffiths McBurney & Partners' (GMP) sales and trading operations. GMP soon became an entrepreneurial and independent investment dealer which focused on serving corporate clients and institutional investors. The company is known to be a top block trader in Canada by volume, using its dominance in trading in the mid-cap market. Wekerle served as Vice Chairman of Institutional Trading at GMP Securities until August, 2011 where he was widely considered a leading investment advisor in Canada. During his time at GMP, he helped establish the firm's hedge fund, institutional trading desk and a reputation for assisting clients in profiting from large-scale transactions. The Globe and Mail newspaper described Mr. Wekerle as one of Bay Street's legendary investment traders.

Aside from his work on Bay Street, Wekerle has worked with various charities. He has helped organize various sporting tournaments, and has been involved with Mount Sinai Hospital, UHN and Sick Kids Hospital. Wekerle has been heavily involved with "Seeds of Hope", an organization that helps under privileged children attain their potential by providing a safe, fun and enriching environment. His generosity is endless, in 2005; his trading desk raised $1.27 million in a day for Tsunami relief.

From 2012 to 2013, Wekerle hand picked the team that is now leading Difference Capital, one of Canada's rapidly emerging last stage venture capital firms.

The Cantech Investment Conference is sponsored by the Toronto Stock Exchange, Difference Capital, PI Financial, Wildeboer Dellelce, Paradigm Capital, and Haywood Securities.
