Attention: Assignment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor TORONTO/ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 6, 2006) - A new state-of-the-art facility at Sunnybrook's Schulich Heart Centre will set a new standard for the future of heart disease research, and will improve the detection of cardiac disease and outcomes of interventional procedures for patients.

The Imaging Research Centre for Cardiac Intervention (IRCCI) will bring together the latest imaging technology with the best minds in clinical care and research. Uniquely designed to combine multiple advanced medical imaging tools like never before, the IRCCI will put Toronto on the map as a leading centre for cardiac imaging. The IRCCI will act as a core resource for University of Toronto teaching hospitals.

Cardiac disease is the leading cause of death in Canada. Enhanced imaging capabilities, critical for more
targeted assessment immediately before, during and after cardiac interventions, ensure patients have the
best outcomes with the least risk. Earlier detection and better, less-invasive treatment means that people
can look forward not only to healthier lives and better chances of survival, but shorter hospital stays and
recovery times.

WHAT: The launch of a world-leading centre in cardiac imaging research that will improve the detection of
cardiac disease and the outcomes of heart patients.

Experience a new generation of cardiac imaging as you view live 3D images of a person's moving heart in
real time using an advanced ultrasound system; witness a "patient" being scanned in the country's
newest cardiac MRI machine; and watch as the patient is literally moved through a "conveyor belt" of
imaging technology from MRI to X-ray to a CATH Lab procedure area, without getting off the bed.
