Caring Comes Full Circle as Volunteers Make Safety Improvements for Struggling Caregivers

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD--(Marketwire - Apr 26, 2011) - Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC) has recruited over 1,000 volunteers to repair the homes of 31 low-income homeowners in the Montgomery County community. RTMC is one of 200 affiliates participating in this nationwide effort to repair 10,000 homes this National Rebuilding Day weekend. Local companies, civic groups, and congregations will come together to help families remain living safely and independently in their homes.

Mr. and Mrs. "O" are grandparents who care for their 2 granddaughters, ages 14 and 4. Mrs. "O" lost her job and is struggling to find work due to her age and demanding schedule caring for the girls. Mr. "O" is on dialysis which limits his time and makes work impossible. Ashton United Methodist Church has partnered with RTMC to renovate their home this Saturday, April 30th.

Utilizing Ashton United Methodist Church volunteers, RTMC will be performing extensive yard-work in order to prevent further water damage and minimize the already existing damage. Gutters will be repaired and trenching and a sump pump will be installed. Major electrical work is also being done including stove replacement, as a precaution against fires. Other repairs include painting and insulation installation.

Mrs. "T" will also receive services from RTMC in partnership with Neelsville Presbyterian Church as their partnering group. She is a retired teacher whose husband suffered traumatic, life-altering injuries over 30 years ago while changing a tire for a stranger in need. His mobility and sight are limited due to his injuries and Mrs. "T" spends most of her time caring for him.

Volunteers from Neelsville Presbyterian Church will install home modifications making daily activities easier for the couple. Other repairs include replacing doors, drywall, and the HVAC. Mr. and Mrs. "T" will also be receiving a new shed and carpeting, both of which will be a surprise for the family.

Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, volunteer organization dedicated to helping low-income homeowners through home repair.
