Carlisle Area School District Blazes a Trail in Education, in Business Review USA

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 4, 2012) - In a report in Business Review USA, Superintendent John W. Friend explains how the "Carlisle Way" creates an engaging learning environment and supportive culture for students.

The Carlisle Area School District has created an award-winning education system by combining unconventional innovation with a tried-and-true culture of respect and excellence. Superintendent John W. Friend outlines the school district's three-pronged focus on increasing student achievement, fostering parent and community engagement and utilizing prudent financial stewardship. These three initiatives have guided what we've looked at and worked on at the district level during the past three years.

The District is comprised of 4,800 students and a total of 10 schools. These 10 schools are made up of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one comprehensive high school. Our comprehensive high school offers both academic and vocational courses, a rare feature in Pennsylvania high schools. The careers and technology course offerings include automotive technology, cosmetology, child care, culinary arts, broadcast communication, construction trades, computer systems networking and information technology.

A unique feature of the district is that it houses the East Coast's largest solar array owned by a public school system. This 1,000-kW photovoltaic array system is spread out over 6.2 acres and saves the district $175,000 per year in energy costs. This solar array has won the district seven awards such as the Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence. The district used approximately 2.5 million dollars in grants to launch the project.

A further distinction of the Carlisle Area School District is its proximity to several renowned higher education institutions such as Dickinson College, the Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson School of Law, and the U.S. Army War College. The Carlisle Area School District worked closely with Dickinson College during the process of planning the solar array.

"Our culture is one thing that sets us apart. We are embedded in the community and have a long history of providing quality educational programs while remaining fiscally responsible," explains John W. Friend, Superintendent of Carlisle Area School District.
