Carrier Access and Tellabs Team to Lower Wireless Transport Costs

Integrated Solution Enables Network Operators to Improve ROI Through Convergence of 2.5G, 3G and Packet Backhaul

BOULDER, CO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 22, 2005 -- Carrier Access Corporation (NASDAQ: CACSE), a leading provider of broadband communications equipment, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tellabs (NASDAQ: TLAB) to produce a solution that enables reduced transport costs for wireless service providers.

Rapid growth in mobile data traffic requires wireless service providers to seek more efficient transport capacity and traffic management tools. Carrier Access and Tellabs have agreed to work together on an integrated solution designed to optimize wireless backhaul traffic. The solution will enable wireless service providers to leverage Carrier Access FLEXengine compression technology with the Tellabs® 5500 digital cross-connect to aggregate data and voice traffic.

The integrated, end-to-end solution employs technology to compress GSM/EDGE Abis and transport of UMTS I traffic between cell sites and switching offices. Compression improves bandwidth usage, providing a cost-effective alternative to capital-intensive upgrades of existing transport capacity between cell sites and mobile switching centers.

"Integration of our technology with new packet access additions to the Tellabs® 5500 system offers our wireless operator customers the ability to economically add 2.5G and 3G wireless data to existing radio access networks," said Roger Koenig, CEO of Carrier Access. "Working with Tellabs, we will offer our wireless customers an end-to-end radio data network solution with a scale in bandwidth from multiple T-1 or DS3 cell sites to optical concentrations in switching offices."

The joint solution extends Tellabs' network management capability to the cell site and adds a GSM/EDGE compression component and UMTS I ATM support to the Tellabs® IntegratedMobile(SM) solution, a full-service portfolio of products and services designed to enable carriers to seamlessly and cost-effectively migrate to next-generation networks.

"Wireless service providers continue to turn to Tellabs to help them migrate to 3G networks seamlessly and cost-effectively," said Steve McCarthy, executive vice president, Global Customer Sales and Service for Tellabs. "Offering Abis compression and UMTS support is one more way Tellabs improves 2G, 2.5G and 3G wireless economics, enabling our customers to direct more resources to delivering advanced services and applications to their end users demand."

Carrier Access FLEXengine technology is a software-defined, high-capacity circuit and packet processing technology for cell site access, switching center, and transport hub locations. It is based on advanced network processing software and custom logic developed by Carrier Access for the Axxius®, and MASTERSeries™ Radio Access Network platforms. FLEXengine is designed to integrate critical functions required to optimize the transport of 2.5G, 3G and 4G broadband data for the upgrade of radio access networks from circuit to efficient packet-based IP, Ethernet or ATM access and routing.
