CASACONFERENCE(SM) to Explore the Link Between Substance Abuse and Trauma

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 1, 2007 -- The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA*) at Columbia University will hold a timely CASACONFERENCE(SM) -- "Compound Fractures: Substance Abuse and Trauma" -- to explore if survivors of terrorism are more likely to numb their emotions and pain with alcohol and drugs, whether U.S. soldiers returning from combat will fight continuing battles with substance abuse, if victims of catastrophes are prone to substance abuse problems, and whether victims of child abuse are likelier to become drug abusers.

The conference, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 at The Zena and Michael A. Wiener Conference Center, 633 Third Avenue, 18th floor, New York City, will examine, in depth, groundbreaking research on the origins and causes of trauma, its implications for substance abuse, and prevention and treatment strategies. Substance abuse and trauma are inextricably linked and each compounds the effects and consequences of the other.

CASA will once again bring together the nation's leading experts and journalists in this field. Delivering keynote addresses will be Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Nora D. Volkow, M.D. and retired U.S. Army Gen. and Former White House Drug Czar Barry R. McCaffrey. Four panel discussions, moderated by leading television journalists, will be conducted during the day: "Wounds of War: Combat, Substance Abuse and Trauma," "Collateral Damage: Child Abuse, Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse," "Disaster Recovery: Catastrophes and Substance Abuse" and "High Impact: Crime, Accidents, Trauma and Substance Abuse."

Panel moderators are: NBC Education Reporter Carol Anne Riddell, CNN's Jeffrey Toobin and Elizabeth Cohen, and Susan Dentzer of PBS' "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer."

Media coverage invited. Journalists are asked to contact Lauren Duran (212-841-5260, lduran@casacolumbia.org) or Sulaiman Beg (212-841-5213, sbeg@casacolumbia.org) to confirm attendance.
