Casual Games Meet Greeting Cards Creating a New Category for Online Greetings

ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS and SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwired - Jan 22, 2014) - Tingly Games, a newly founded venture by game veterans, Ard Bonewald and Mark Overmars, is launching a brand new concept for online and mobile greeting cards which embraces the ever-increasing global passion for casual games. The service, Greeting Games at (in beta), enables people to tailor and send a casual game to friends and family members with an integrated personalized greeting for occasions such as birthdays, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

More than 700 million people from young children to their parents and grandparents play casual games on their tablets, phones and desktops according to comScore. Studies show that the percentage of game players is not abating and continues to increase, especially due to the growth of mobile device ownership which facilitates easy access to games.

Greeting Games is tapping into that market by introducing game play into e-greetings, an industry that also continues to grow as people increasingly communicate with each other digitally vs. via paper-based communications.

Ard Bonewald, CEO of Tingly Games, said, "Games have become a part of our daily lives. We not only play them, we socialize through them. We even find friends and partners via games. Games are a new form of communication. By combining games with greeting cards, another more established form of communication, we are enabling senders and receivers to have even more fun with their greetings and conversations with each other."

Greeting card industry analyst, Sarah Turk of IBISWorld, said, "Greeting Games is a clever new endeavor for online greeting cards. The greeting card industry has moved toward creating premium cards like these to match rising disposable income of their customers."

Turk elaborated by saying, "Industry revenue for the online greeting cards industry is expected to increase over the next five years as card stores close and internet connections rise."

Mark Overmars, the CTO of Tingly Games, built the service in HTML5 to ensure it is seamless on all devices from high-end tablets to even the most economical smart phones. The new service is free through the end of January while the company gathers user feedback. After that, the site will provide a subscription service and the ability for consumers to pay for individual greeting games for a nominal fee.

Currently, users can include their Facebook avatar in their greeting, set the difficulty level of a game, provide in-game messages, create a personal message within the game and customize the email message. Game types include Mahjong, Sudoku, match-three games, slicers, bubble shooters and jigsaw puzzles. Many more game types and personalization options will be available in the coming months including different visual styles which reflect the sender's visual preferences. Tingly Games is also proactively working with game developers to expand these options based upon successful game types.
