Catch the Spirit Campaign Spreads Seasonal Joy with Holiday Hometown Hero Recognition Calgary Student Monica Tawfik Named Holiday Hero for Extraordinary Community Efforts

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Dec. 27, 2013) - In true holiday spirit, Calgary resident Monica Tawfik has been chosen by Bentall Kennedy's nationwide Catch the Spirit Campaign as their holiday hometown hero for 2013.

The Catch the Spirit campaign encouraged people to nominate extraordinary citizens leading up to the holiday season (www.catchthespirit.ca). Nominated by her mother and fellow city outreach worker, Tawfik is a medical student who spends her time off helping Calgary's less fortunate. Tawfik prepares food hampers and delivers them herself to single mothers in the city throughout the year with hope that she can make a difference and affect change in the lives of people in her community.

"I feel honoured be recognized as a Holiday Hero and hope that I can get others involved in my efforts in Calgary, especially during the cold winter months," said Tawfik, "It always feels great to be able to give back to my community and to be recognized during the holidays makes it extra special." Tawfik will receive a $500 shopping spree as a reward for her acts of kindness. She is currently spending her holiday in Vancouver, helping to feed the homeless on the city's Downtown Eastside.

In addition, as part of the nationwide Catch the Spirit Campaign, two winners have been chosen to receive a $10,000 shopping spree with $2,500 being donated to the charity of their choice. Heidi Bernans of London, Ontario will be donating $2,500 to the Crohns & Colitis Foundation of Canada and Sadley Shindruk of Cloverdale, BC will be donating $2,500 to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
