Cavium Networks Introduces Innovative DPI Protocol Software for 3G/4G Core Networks With Industry Leading Performance Using OCTEON Processors

Cavium DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) Protocol Software Technology Scales to 40Gbps Performance and Has Been Selected by Leading Mobile Internet OEMs

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - February 15, 2010) - Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking and wireless applications, today announced the Cavium DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) Protocol Software Toolkit which offers industry's highest DPI performance necessary for Evolved Packet Core applications. The DPI Protocol Software utilizes extensive hardware acceleration in OCTEON Plus Multi-core MIPS processors, NITROX DPI Processors and OCTEON II processors to deliver unmatched performance which scales up to 40Gbps. It can detect and analyze hundreds of widely used protocols and can be dynamically updated in the field or at OEM customer for additional protocols. The DPI toolkit is targeted for manufacturers of networking, wireless and storage infrastructure equipment.

Cavium Networks will be demonstrating its DPI Software Stack in Hall 2, stand 2C05 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from February 15th - 18th, 2010. To schedule a private meeting with Cavium Networks' executives at MWC please contact Angel Atondo via email:

Wired and wireless infrastructure networks are being inundated by a variety of internet data, video and voice traffic resulting in an explosion of bandwidth requirements. However, carriers continue to be challenged by a relatively slower growth in average revenue per user (ARPU). It is becoming increasingly imperative for carriers to unlock the revenue potential of the increasing traffic and monetize their infrastructure investment, while reducing opex and subscriber churn. Moreover, the deployment of packet core networks such as xGSN and EPC to support increasing number of users, content types and data rates necessitates implementing quality of service (QOS) and Policy and Charging Rules Functions (PCRF) for billing systems, revenue sharing and newer business models with advertisers and content providers. High Performance Deep Packet Inspection enables carriers to address these requirements by delivering newer billable services and tiered levels of service, preventing malicious traffic and monitoring the overall network and application health to ensure effective utilization.

Cavium's intelligent DPI protocol software consists of carrier-grade, protocol detection software which can be utilized inline or out of band to detect hundreds of protocols including Internet (HTTP, FTP etc), Email (IMAP, POP3, SMTP etc.), Web 2.0 (Facebook, Myspace etc), Multimedia (Flash, Quicktime, Youtube etc), Peer to Peer (Bittorrent, eDonkey etc) and Voice and Messaging (Skype, GoogleTalk, Yahoo etc). Cavium's DPI software is highly flexible, upgradeable and customizable and includes configurable detection engines for signature, heuristics and ports as well as supports flow based detection. It is easily extensible via customer plug-ins during design stage or in the field.

The Cavium DPI software extensively utilizes hardware acceleration features that are part of Cavium's OCTEON multi-core processors including packet processing, regular expression hardware and multi-core scaling to deliver market-leading performance of up to 40Gbps. Core equipment can integrate this DPI protocol solution to enable a variety of features such as subscriber charging, application aware QOS and service level agreements, usage monitoring and preventing denial of service.
