Cavium Networks Secures Design Win at Xyratex for Industry Standards-Based Storage Bridge Bay (SBB) Reference Platform

OCTEON-Based Intelligent I/O Controller Reference Platform Delivers Maximum Performance and Power Efficiency for Intelligent Storage Solutions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - October 12, 2009) - Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, storage, wireless, video and security applications, today announced a design win for Xyratex's SBB v2.0 controller reference platform for the OneStor™ product line.

The Intelligent Storage controller reference platform is optimized for I/O-centric processing applications. It features a Cavium OCTEON Plus Storage Processor in an SBB v2.0 compliant module and delivers leading performance and power efficiency along with an unmatched set of storage hardware acceleration with flexible connectivity options such as Fibre Channel, SAS or Ethernet.

Cavium believes intelligent storage controllers will drive the development of highly innovative, IO-centric products taking advantage of the OCTEON Processor's hardware acceleration and CPU core density especially for converged networks utilizing standard operating systems, libraries and development environments.

The OCTEON-based SBB platform provides enterprise features such as hot-plug, cable-free design, high availability, low-power and high I/O performance to deliver a range of products suitable for multiple points within the existing enterprise and emerging Cloud storage infrastructure.

"Based on our customer feedback and overall storage market trends, it is clear that there will be increased intelligent IO processing in future storage systems," said Steve Barber, CEO of Xyratex. "We found Cavium's OCTEON Plus solution to deliver an excellent combination of performance and hardware acceleration in a constrained SBB power envelope, enabling this paradigm shift towards intelligent I/O-centric architectures."

"Xyratex is a market leader in providing innovative storage solutions with a proven track record of OEM customers and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Xyratex," said Rajiv Khemani, vice president and general manager, Networking and Communications, Cavium Networks. "OCTEON Plus processors provide industry-leading storage I/O processing performance along with extensive integration of storage services hardware acceleration. We believe that the Intelligent I/O platform with OCTEON Plus will drive compelling cloud-enabled storage systems."

OCTEON multi-core processors provide a scalable range from one to 32 cnMIPS™ cores on a single chip along with the most advanced networking, storage, security and application hardware acceleration. The cnMIPS core is Cavium's custom implementation of MIPS64 release2, optimized for networking and services with very low power consumption. Application hardware acceleration engines for QoS, packet processing, TCP, compression, encryption, RAID, de-duplication and pattern matching allow the family to deliver unmatched scalability, performance and integration. Flexible standards-based I/Os including gigabit Ethernet, 10 gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express Gen 1 and 2, USB2.0 and Interlaken enable flexible, high-bandwidth network and system connectivity.
