CBS 3's Larry Mendte Salutes Hometown Military Heroes in Memorial Day Special, "A Moment To Remember"

Program to Feature Snapshots of Every Local Soldier Lost in Iraq and Afghanistan

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 25, 2007 -- Anchor Larry Mendte will salute area sons and daughters who made the ultimate sacrifice in a moving CBS 3 Memorial Day special, "A Moment To Remember" airing this Monday, May 28, at 7 p.m. on Channel 3.

The half hour special centers on the story of one soldier, Corporal Stephen McGowan of Newark, Delaware, who made children his personal mission in Iraq. McGowen looked past the war to see the beauty in the children and began handing out Beanie Babies to the young people he would meet. He became known nationally as "the Beanie Baby soldier." While McGowen's personal mission was cut short when he lost his life to a roadside bomb, his fellow soldiers continue to give out Beanie Babies in his name.

But the program goes beyond this one inspiring story by featuring remembrances of many of the family members of local soldiers lost in the war and by including a photo of each and every one of the 89 area men and women lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Originally, the special was focused exclusively on McGowen," Mendte says, "but the more I thought about all of the families in our area who have lost sons and daughters, I knew they would be thinking, 'well my child is special too,' and they're right. That's when we decided to contact each and every family and include a personal photo of every local soldier."

"A Moment To Remember" will be rebroadcast on Sunday, June 3rd, at 11 a.m. on CBS 3. CBS 3 (KYW-TV) is part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.
