CCUA Statement on the Passing of the Hon. Mauril Belanger, P.C., M.P.

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - August 17, 2016) - Martha Durdin, President and CEO of the Canadian Credit Union Association, issued the following statement:

My colleagues and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Mauril Bélanger.

Mauril was truly a fighter. He dedicated over 30 years of his life to service in staff and elected roles at the federal and municipal level, most recently representing the people of Ottawa-Vanier.

I and many others in the credit union sector will remember Mauril in particular for his work in the last four years as a visionary and enthusiastic champion of co-operatives. Recalling the importance of the caisse populaire to his home town of Mattawa, Ontario, Mauril urged his caucus colleagues to make him their very first spokesperson for co-operatives in 2012.

In this role he was instrumental persuading the House of Commons to strike a special committee on co-operatives, created an all-party co-operative caucus, and fought for better appreciation of the vital importance of co-operatives and credit unions to Canada's economy and communities.

In his words and his actions, Mauril demonstrated his belief that co-operatives are more than just another way to organize and govern businesses; they are, in their openness, equality and resilience, a reflection of who we are as Canadians.

Our thoughts are with Mauril's wife Catherine, his family and his colleagues in the House of Commons.
