CDK Global Continues to Drive an Innovative Culture With Hack-a-thon

Portland-Based Competition Inspires Dozens of CDK's Coders and Developers to Offer up New Ideas at Winter Hack-a-thon

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL--(Marketwired - Dec 17, 2014) - CDK Global, Inc. ("CDK Global" and "CDK") (NASDAQ: CDK) announced today the incredibly successful completion of the Winter edition of its biannual Hack-a-thon, which uses team-building exercises to promote innovation, cooperation and excitement for developing industry-leading innovation for our clients. The outcome greatly exceeded expectations, with over 150 employees participating (in teams of 4-6 people) from various development teams, to pitch new, inspired ideas to the company. The judges were comprised of both CDK and client executives.

The Hack-a-thon is another example of CDK driving innovation throughout its culture; building upon its move to agile product development methodology and the creation of collaborative, open workspaces in its offices.

"The idea behind the Hack-a-thon is for Associates to join teams with co-workers they may know little about -- in order to meet new people, learn about new tools, innovate new ideas, and most importantly, have fun while creating future CDK innovations," said Justin Burger, Director of Development at CDK and Hack-a-thon Master Organizer. "In the end, we choose one idea to pursue and grow, but in reality, everyone who participates wins in the long run."

In the spirit of innovation, teamwork and the Faster Forward mantra, the Hack-a-thon was designed to bring together CDK employees in an environment that differs from their day-to-day routine -- one in which they are inspired to innovate, seek new ideas and collaborate with people outside of their everyday teams. There were no restrictions on the technology used, and the use of 'new-to-you' technologies was encouraged -- all with the end goal of creating a positive client experience.

"The Hack-a-thon is all about cultivating a culture of innovation. It's a chance for our Associates to reconnect to the work that drives them, have fun and create something awesome," said Rajiv Amar, Division VP of Development at CDK and Hack-a-thon Executive Sponsor.

This year's winning team's idea was centered on providing tools to collect and display underutilized data in a simple and intuitive way for clients and developers alike. The team used Java, Tomcat, Angular, and Firebase on a Linux platform to provide a data lake, data cube, data mart, widget-based dashboard, data visualization widget tool builder, and a widget gallery to view all widgets that have been built in real-time as a single application.

The data visualization tools can display historical or real-time data using cloud driven technologies, across the entire enterprise; from Front Office to Service applications and to the Dealer Management System. For developers, these tools can be easily plugged into almost any application, including mobile.

This is the third such event at CDK's Portland office, and participation continues to grow with each one. They host two Hack-a-thons per year -- Spring and Winter.

CDK Global is on a mission to build an associate environment that drives technology innovation and attracts top tier talent.
