Cellular One of Texoma Eliminates T1 Backhaul Costs and Enables Future Rollout of IP Services With Exalt

Exalt Microwave Backhaul Systems Deliver Payback in Less Than a Year

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - May 18, 2010) -  Exalt Communications, the company that is reinventing microwave backhaul, today announced that Cellular One of Texoma, a local PCS cellular provider based in Wichita Falls, Texas, has deployed Exalt microwave backhaul systems to eliminate recurring monthly costs for leased T1 backhaul lines throughout its 120-site network in north central Texas and southern Oklahoma. Looking ahead, Cellular One of Texoma will also use the Exalt systems' native Ethernet capabilities to scale out IP services for its customers.

"We were getting squeezed by the recurring monthly fees for the T1 lines we were using for backhaul and because we serve a rural area, we also weren't getting the reliability we needed on those connections," said Kevin McWhorter, Engineering Operations Manager at Cellular One of Texoma. "With the Exalt systems, we get much more reliable backhaul links with combined TDM and IP capabilities, and by eliminating monthly leased line charges, the systems pay for themselves in less than a year, and we own our network."

The Exalt all-indoor microwave backhaul systems were supplied by Exalt partner AirWay Technologies of Hebron, Kentucky, a leading provider of telecommunications products and services to network operators worldwide. The Exalt backhaul systems take advantage of Exalt's superior interference mitigation technology, which allows Cellular One of Texoma to collocate Exalt systems in close proximity to one another on a single tower. In addition, each radio's built-in spectrum analyzer and ability to be tuned in 1 MHz increments makes it easy to optimize the performance of each link for maximum service and reliability. Each of the links is currently configured to provide four T1 connections, but McWhorter looks forward to scaling up the systems' Ethernet capabilities so Cellular One can offer IP services over the same links in the future.

"Whether wrestling with lower margins due to high monthly T1 costs or scaling up backhaul bandwidth to offer advanced new services, mobile operators like Cellular One are determining that they have greater flexibility and lower costs when they own the network," said Amir Zoufonoun, president and CEO of Exalt Communications. "These operators are turning to Exalt microwave backhaul systems because they deliver the reliability and performance carriers demand, with the flexibility to reduce TDM costs today and support advanced IP services in the future."

The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 40 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
