Cenotaph Restoration Project in New Brunswick Made Possible Thanks to Government of Canada Support

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, announced today up to $8,330 in federal government support for a project in St-Simon, New Brunswick to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"By supporting the restoration of cenotaphs and monuments across the country, the Government of Canada is ensuring sacred areas of commemoration reflect the respect and dignity befitting for Canada's Veterans," said Minister Blackburn. "These memorials show our Veterans that we will keep the torch of remembrance lit for generations to come."

The St-Simon Church will receive funding to restore the St-Simon Church Cenotaph. Built in the late 1960s on the church grounds, this memorial commemorates the soldiers who died in the Second World War.

Planned restoration work includes removing the cross from the existing cenotaph, replacing the existing structure with a new granite structure and installing the cross from the original cenotaph onto the new structure.

"Local cenotaphs and monuments are important landmarks in our cities and towns," said Minister Ashfield. "This contribution will help ensure that the St-Simon Church Cenotaph remains a place of remembrance and reflection in the community for many years."

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
