Cenotaph Restoration Project in Newfoundland and Labrador Made Possible Thanks to Government of Canada Support

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced today up to $2,625 in federal government support for a project in Victoria, Newfoundland-and-Labrador, to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"By supporting the restoration of cenotaphs and monuments across the country, the Government of Canada is ensuring sacred areas of commemoration reflect the respect and dignity befitting for Canada's Veterans," said Minister Blackburn. "These memorials show our Veterans that we will keep the torch of remembrance lit for generations to come."

The Town of Victoria will receive funding to restore the Victoria War Memorial. Built in 1990 beside the municipal building, this memorial commemorates those who fought in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.

Planned restoration work includes extending the retaining wall which is currently located immediately behind the cenotaph. It will be extended around the side of the structure to connect with an existing staircase.

"It is our collective duty and responsibility to remember and honour the brave men and women who have and continue to serve Canada so selflessly," said Minister MacKay. "I am pleased that our government is supporting the restoration of these memorials to carry on the legacy of Canada's heroes."

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
