Cenotaph Restoration Project in Nova Scotia Made Possible Thanks to Government of Canada Support

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced today up to $13,400 in federal government support for a project in Sydney, Nova Scotia to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"By supporting the restoration of cenotaphs and monuments across the country, the Government of Canada is ensuring sacred areas of commemoration reflect the respect and dignity befitting for Canada's Veterans," said Minister Blackburn. "These memorials show our Veterans that we will keep the torch of remembrance lit for generations to come."

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #138 will receive funding to restore the Ashby War Memorial. Built in 1995 on the corner of Prince Street and Victoria Road, this memorial commemorates community members who served in Canada's Armed Forces and Merchant Navy in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.

Planned restoration work includes removing the existing cenotaph, base and flagpoles and reinstalling them below the frost line to prevent future heaving. This will involve excavation of the site; reinstalling the original cenotaph; installing new flag poles and benches; and landscaping as required.

"Memorials are more than structures of stone and mortar," said Minister MacKay. "They represent sacrifice and honour. They provide community members with a place to gather in honour of those who served for this country. Most importantly, they carry on the importance of remembrance for future generations."

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
