Center Grove Elementary Goes Green in Greenwood and Earns the ENERGY STAR® for Superior Energy Efficiency

GREENWOOD, IN--(Marketwire - June 17, 2008) - Center Grove Elementary of the Center Grove Community School Corporation has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) prestigious ENERGY STAR, the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection. Commercial and industrial buildings, including K-12 schools, that rate as the most energy efficient facilities in the nation may qualify for the ENERGY STAR. Among Indiana schools, Center Grove Elementary is distinguished as one of just 12 Indiana schools with the ENERGY STAR rating.

"At a time when there is increased pressure to do more with less resources, we are doing everything we can to save energy. This ENERGY STAR award recognizes our efforts at Center Grove Elementary," said Paul Gabriel, Chief Financial Officer.

School and commercial buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR use less energy than typical buildings and release less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Center Grove Elementary has saved $125,253 in the first four years of their guaranteed savings contract period and is 34% more energy efficient than before the renovation. It has also prevented greenhouse gas emissions of 475 metric tons, equivalent to the electricity use of 63 homes for an entire year.*

To earn the ENERGY STAR, Center Grove Elementary partnered with Performance Services, an Indiana-based design-build engineering and construction company that specializes in energy savings projects in K-12 schools. Together, optimal learning environment criteria and rigorous indoor air quality and lighting standards were established. Solutions for Center Grove Elementary included a new HVAC system with digital controls, new energy efficient and improved lighting, as well as new energy efficient windows and outside doors throughout the school. Indoor air quality is also routinely monitored with CO2 sensors in classrooms.

"It's been our pleasure to work with Paul Gabriel, school officials and the facilities staff at Center Grove Community Schools. It's rewarding to provide our services to create an optimal learning environment for every student, as well as lower energy costs and reduce the effect on the environment," said Tim Thoman, President of Performance Services, an ENERGY STAR partner that is leading the State of Indiana with guaranteed savings contracts in 9 of the 18 ENERGY STAR rated K-12 schools.
