Central Ontario Woodlot-owners' Co-op is Recognized Innovator

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 21, 2005) - A group of woodlot owners committed to sustainable and responsible forest practices based near Havelock, ON, east of Peterborough were recognized by the Ontario co-operative sector at the Co-op Week Gala and Spirit Awards Recognition ceremony on Wednesday in Burlington.

Their unique co-operative, Upper Canada Woods Co-operative, received the New Co-operative of Distinction Award of the Ontario Co-operative Association.

The co-op also promotes local manufacturing of value-added products which strengthens the co-op, its members and their communities.

Formed in 2004, Upper Canada Woods Co-operative has 45 members who own 8,000 acres. In addition to encouraging environmentally-friendly practices and protecting the safety of wildlife habitats, the co-op provides landowner and consumer education.

A number of the co-op's members also market their timber through this unique co-op. As Stephen Pitt of the Lennox & Addington Community Stewardship Council notes, "this will become a model for other private woodlot owners across Ontario."
