CEPA Supports Pipeline Safety Review

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 20, 2012) - The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) strongly supports the announcement made by Alberta's Minister of Energy this morning regarding a comprehensive review of pipeline integrity programs, watercourse crossings and emergency response plans.

Brenda Kenny, President and CEO, stated that regulatory oversight is an important component to ensure Canadian pipelines remain the safest in the world. CEPA members are committed to working collaboratively with the regulator and further earning the trust of Canadians. This includes acknowledging the need for greater transparency regarding operational and safety practices.

CEPA members continuously seek out and apply practices and technologies designed to further improve pipeline safety. Anything the industry can learn from this review will ultimately help advance safety and will be integrated into CEPA member companies' ongoing pipeline safety programs.

Canadians expect safe and responsible transportation of energy products. Safety has always been the number one priority for CEPA members.

"We're listening, have taken action, and will continue to take action to respond to concerns and recommendations put forward regarding pipelines in Canada, while continuing to deliver energy to Canadians."

Kenny added that CEPA members will be committing to specific actions in the coming months to further improve pipeline safety.

CEPA represents Canada's transmission pipeline companies who operate more than 100,000 kilometres of pipeline in Canada and the United States. These energy highways moved approximately 1.2 billion barrels of liquid petroleum products and 5.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas last year. Our members transport 97 per cent of Canada's daily natural gas and onshore crude oil from producing regions to markets throughout North America.
