Ceph Sponsors Ada Initiative to Support Women in Open-Source Technology

Joint Campaign Raises Over $10,000 for Non-Profit to Encourage Women in Technology

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 5, 2012) - Ceph, the open-source, massively scalable distributed storage platform, today announced that Ceph is a Bronze-level sponsor with the Ada Initiative, the non-profit organization dedicated to supporting women in open technology and culture. As a sponsor, Ceph pledged to match all donations made to the Ada Initiative between January 17 - 19, 2012, resulting in more than $10,000 being donated to the non-profit.

In recent decades, women have smashed through the glass ceiling and gained dominance in many formerly male-dominated industries. However, while women now comprise nearly half of the American workforce, they continue to be underrepresented in many technology fields -- particularly in open-source technology. The non-profit Ada Initiative was founded in order to help bring awareness to this issue and to provide support for women in open technology.

A Bronze-level sponsor, Ceph promised to match all donations made to the Ada Initiative between January 17 - 19, 2012. During the three-day campaign, $1583 was donated to the non-profit. Ceph matched that $1583 and added an additional $7000 donation, bringing the total raised to $10,166.

"Ceph's support for our work has been crucial," said Valerie Aurora, Executive Director of the Ada Initiative. "We're proud to work with a company that gets both the practical and idealistic reasons to support women in open source. Ceph's Sage Weil and Bryan Bogensberger are making a difference both for their company and for the culture of open source as a whole."

"As part of the open-source community, the Ceph team was aware of the shortage of women in our industry. But the issue really hit home recently because Ceph is growing quickly, and we're hiring many highly skilled technology workers, but very few of those applicants have been women," said Bryan Bogensberger, President and COO of Ceph Storage at DreamHost. "The Ceph team wanted to do something to help, so we decided to sponsor the Ada Initiative to encourage more women to get involved with open-source technology."
