Champion Petfoods LP -- Innovation and Economic Investment: BAFRINO Research and Innovation Centre

EDMONTON, AB--(Marketwired - November 17, 2014) - Today marks a new day for innovation at Champion Petfoods with the announcement of a $5.9 million Research and Innovation Centre.

Built in our Morinville home, the 9500 square foot facility will focus on creating new ACANA and ORIJEN Biologically Appropriate™ foods that mirror the evolutionary diets of dogs and cats and feature unmatched inclusions of Fresh Regional Ingredients.

"Innovation has always been the core of our success," said Champion Petfoods' President and CEO, Frank Burdzy. "Although our markets are global, Morinville is our home. We are both fortunate and proud to build our new research and innovation facility right here, where our story really began."

Working closely with the new pilot-scale extruder at the University of Alberta, the new Research and Innovation Centre will develop new fresh meat processing technologies aimed at further increasing the fresh meat inclusions in Champion's Biologically Appropriate dog and cat foods.

"Forward-thinking entrepreneurs are at the heart of a strong and vibrant rural economy," said the Honourable Verlyn Olson, Alberta's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. "Made-in-Alberta businesses such as Champion Petfoods are continuing to succeed because they are investing in innovation, striving for excellence and expanding their market opportunities, while continuing to grow their roots here at home."

"This is a great example of the fantastic economic environment in Alberta, this says that you can build and grow a successful company that is also an integral part of our community," said Alberta's Minister of Culture and Tourism and local MLA, the Honourable Maureen Kubinec.

"Economic development is a key priority for our administration," said Morinville Mayor, Lisa Holmes. "Council has worked hard to set the stage for thoughtful growth, and it is nice to see millions being invested in our community."

The BAFRINO Research and Innovation Centre will open spring 2015.
