Change of Command at Canadian Expeditionary Force Command

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 11, 2009) - This afternoon, Lieutenant-General Marc Lessard accepted the responsibility of defending and protecting Canada's interests overseas as he became the new Commander of Canadian Expeditionary Force Command (CEFCOM) during a ceremony at the Cartier Square Drill Hall. Lt.-Gen. Lessard replaces Lt.-Gen. Michel Gauthier.

"Lieutenant-General Gauthier is an exceptional soldier whose dedication has cemented CEFCOM's ability to carry out military operations ranging from humanitarian aid to combat missions," said Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. "Through his leadership, CEFCOM is, and will continue to be, ready to respond to Canada's military needs around the world."

"I am immensely proud of the contribution CEFCOM makes on a daily basis to support Canada's deployed soldiers, sailors, airwomen and airmen, and special forces personnel," said Lt.-Gen. Gauthier. "The role of Commander CEFCOM has allowed me to test the limits of the art of the possible, and, at the same time, it has been both a personally rewarding experience and a unique opportunity to serve my country."

Lt.-Gen. Gauthier accepted the command of CEFCOM in September 2005, and directed the organization's structural design under the Canadian Forces Transformation initiative. CEFCOM stood up on February 1, 2006 and, since then, Lt.-Gen. Gauthier has overseen military operations around the world ranging from humanitarian assistance and advice, through peace support to combat. CEFCOM task forces operate in multinational coalitions under NATO or the United Nations, often as part of a Canadian "whole of government" team.

"We are engaged around the world at sea and on land, so I am eager to take on this new appointment," said Lt.-Gen. Lessard. "With all the challenges we face, it promises to be both exciting and busy."

CEFCOM is committed to the conduct of fully integrated global operations, across the spectrum from humanitarian assistance to combat, in concert with national and international partners to achieve timely and decisive effects in support of Canada's national interests.
