Change of Command at Canadian Operational Support Command

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 21, 2012) - Major-General Steven P. Noonan assumed the duties of Commander of Canadian Operational Support Command (CANOSCOM) from Major-General Mark E. McQuillan this morning, in a ceremony held at the Cartier Square Drill Hall. General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff, was the presiding officer.

"The efforts of CANOSCOM don't always draw attention, but without the hard work of the members of this command, Canada would not be able to uphold its international obligations," said the honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "Major-General McQuillan led this group of dedicated, unsung heroes during a time of great activity, and did so with remarkable skill. His role in Canadian Forces operations over the past three years is greatly appreciated.

"I look forward to working with Major-General Noonan as he carries on the fine work of CANOSCOM."

"The Canadian Forces' success on operations is a reflection of the achievements of Canadian Operational Support Command. Under the superb leadership of Major-General Mark McQuillan, the men and women of CANOSCOM accomplished their tasks with great dedication, professionalism, and tenacity," said General Natynczyk. "I wish to congratulate Major-General Steve Noonan as he assumes his appointment as Commander of CANOSCOM. I have every confidence in him and his team to continue to provide outstanding support to all domestic and international operations undertaken by the Canadian Forces."

"Major-General McQuillan has led CANOSCOM during a period of intense operational tempo, at home and internationally, and has displayed outstanding leadership in guiding CANOSCOM through tremendous periods of change and challenge in Afghanistan and around the world," said Major-General Noonan. "As I take command, and we prepare for the next phase of Canadian Forces transformation, it is my intent to continue to deliver excellence in operational support to the men and women of the Canadian Forces wherever they may be deployed in support of Canada and Canadians."

"Over the past three years, CANOSCOM has supported thousands of Canadian Forces personnel on international and domestic operations," said Major-General McQuillan. "We supported relief operations in Haiti, and assisted in the transition in Afghanistan from combat to the training mission centred on Kabul, as well as the herculean efforts repatriating Canadian Forces materiel from Kandahar province back to Canada. I am extremely proud of our team, and honoured to have had the opportunity to lead CANOSCOM through these very demanding times."

CANOSCOM supports all Canadian Forces (CF) domestic, continental, and international operations. This command is responsible for planning and executing the delivery of national-level operational support for theatre activation, sustainment, and termination of CF operations. Within CANOSCOM is a full range of combat support and combat service support functions, including aspects of military engineering, health services, military police, logistics, land equipment maintenance, personnel support, resource management, and communications and information systems.
