Changes at Calgary Parking Authority

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 19, 2011) - The Calgary Parking Authority is announcing changes in its strategic direction which includes changes in senior management.

A strategic review by an independent consultant last year resulted in some recommended changes and adjustments in operations to improve customer service, clarify roles, outline financial aspects and enhance operations. The independent review made recommendations in three main categories:

  • clarifying roles and responsibilities regarding the mandate of the CPA, and clarifying expectations regarding financial return and control;
  • improving governance practices such as the composition of the CPA board and board selection; and
  • developing a performance measurement system and improving the customer service focus.

Board member Alderman Gael MacLeod said the CPA has made some adjustments and changes as a result of the strategic review conducted in 2010. As well, composition of the Board changed in recent months, adding to the shift in Board guidance and direction.

Today, the CPA Board of Directors announced the General Manager and Assistant General Manager are leaving the organization. An interim general manager has been appointed to oversee day-to-day operations.

"The CPA board felt it was time to make some changes in leadership at the CPA," said MacLeod following a special board meeting this morning. "The strategic review brought to light some divergence of opinions between the Board and CPA management on stakeholder relations, customer service and how to manage some aspects of the operations. This led to the decision to change leadership to align with the new strategic direction."

The Calgary Parking Authority was established by bylaw in 1968. It is mandated by City Council to provide safe, clean, affordable and accessible parking to Calgarians and visitors.

The CPA manages on-street parking in the city and approximately 18 per cent of off-street parking in the downtown core.

The Board's Personnel Committee will launch a search for a new General Manager immediately.
