Charges Laid Against A Member of the Canadian Armed Forces

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 20, 2014) - Yesterday, the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) charged a member of the Canadian Armed Forces with offences related to sexual assault.

MCpl Malcom McCarty, a 28-year-old of The Royal Canadian Dragoons of Garrison Petawawa, Ontario was charged with:

  • two counts of Sexual Assault in accordance with section 130 of the National Defence Act, pursuant to section 271 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

"The Canadian Armed Forces and the Military Police treat every allegation of sexual assault as a serious crime," said LCol Brian Frei, Commanding Officer, CFNIS. "Such cases erode the standards of military discipline and victimize everyone involved. The Military Police will thoroughly investigate allegations of sexual assault and lay charges accordingly."

The CFNIS is a unit within the independent Canadian Forces Military Police Group whose mandate is to investigate serious and sensitive matters in relation to Department of National Defence property, Department of National Defence employees and Canadian Armed Forces personnel serving in Canada and around the world.
