Chartwells School Dining Services Celebrates National Breakfast Week

RYE BROOK, NY--(Marketwire - Mar 5, 2012) - For over 45 years, the National School Breakfast Program has been a key factor in fueling the bodies and minds of millions of American school children. Chartwells School Dining Services provides over 2.3 million breakfasts daily in schools nationwide. This week, schools celebrate National School Breakfast Week with special promotions, menus and events.

Chartwells School Dining Services knows the uphill battles that families face with breakfast. There are many reasons that children do not eat breakfast. These reasons may be related to parents' work schedules, oversleeping, school/bus schedules, before-school extra-curricular activities/sports practices or the lack of a School Breakfast Program. Whatever the reason, many children are often hungry by the time school starts or gets underway, and a balanced breakfast directly contributes to the functions necessary to perform tasks at school.

Chartwells believes that breakfast is an important part of the school day. Research suggests that students who eat a morning meal earn higher test scores, are more attentive in class and have fewer hunger-related disruptive behaviors. A child who eats breakfast is more alert, focused and ready to learn. The Chartwells' school breakfast program is designed to deliver convenient and nutritious meals for students to start the day off right. The program helps students 'fuel up' for a full day's work with student-friendly foods that are available at their convenience. Breakfast foods include a wide variety of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and lean proteins.

As part of Chartwells' Simply Good student nutrition education program, which also emphasizes food grown locally, Chartwells' employees use breakfast to highlight fruits and vegetables that are in season and readily available. Monthly Simply Good "food focuses" highlight popular fruits and vegetables and show how they can be incorporated into breakfast.

"Breakfast club cards" are used to encourage students to eat breakfast at school on a regular basis, giving them rewards for being a repeat breakfast customer. Meal combos bundle popular breakfast foods to create a complete meal for student diners so a complete breakfast is only a "grab and go" away. Chartwells chefs conduct culinary demonstrations featuring sample items such as yogurt parfaits, oatmeal mix-ups, breakfast crepes, and easy omelets. Students can see that there are some exciting things happening at breakfast. "Breakfast or Brunch for Lunch" is a fun twist where breakfast foods are showcased at lunch time. This promotes and encourages students to sample and check out breakfast, which is served every morning at school.

These are all examples of how Chartwells typically promotes and encourages students to wake up for breakfast, but especially this week as schools highlight and feature some exciting breakfast menus and events across the country in honor of National School Breakfast week.
