Cheapflights.com Ranks Up and Coming Travel Destinations From Around the World

Eastern Europe Hot Spots Top Global Rising Stars Report

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Sep 27, 2011) - After compiling search data from the first six months of 2010 and 2011, Cheapflights.com, the online leader in publishing travel deals, has come out with its 2011 Global Rising Stars Report. This annual report is our look at up and coming travel destinations as determined by year-over-year searches on Cheapflights.com.

The 2011 Global Rising Stars Report is a ranking of the five destinations with the biggest percent increase within five key geographic regions: Europe, Asia/Oceania, North America, South America and Africa. The top two slots in the list of 25, Tallinn, Estonia, and Wroclaw, Poland, are slices of old world Europe that have made successful transitions from communism to capitalism.

"Tallinn and Wroclaw are two charming spots that are a little off the beaten tourist path but not surprising emerging destinations, especially as the eurozone expands east calling attention to those looking to travel on the euro or ahead of its adoption," said Lauren Sullivan, site editor for Cheapflights.com. "When we compile our Rising Stars Report, we find a great mix of spots and reasons why there is an upswing in interest. Everything from natural disasters and political unrest to currency fluctuations and major investments in new infrastructure can impact the relative popularity and affordability of a town or a whole region."

Overall, U.S. travelers seemed more open to traveling farther and trying new things, perhaps in the name of bargain hunting. Other top spots were in places such as South Africa, Thailand and even Saudi Arabia while only one U.S. destination, Key West, made the list. Certainly, in a time when the U.S. dollar has lost some of its punch, it's possible to get more bang for the buck in select overseas destinations.

Below are the top five destinations from the Cheapflights.com 2011 Global Rising Stars Report:

Rank Destination Percentage change over 2010
1 Tallinn, Estonia 354%
2 Wroclaw, Poland 349%
3 George, S Africa 169%
4 Thessaloniki, Greece 128%
5 Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 114%

Sister sites Cheapflights.ca, Cheapflights.co.uk and Cheapflug.de have run the same comparisons for travelers from Canada, the UK and Germany. While the rising stars vary greatly across these markets, Eastern Europe into the Eurasian border region -- from Greece to Turkey to Cyprus -- all fared well showing a shifting tourism landscape, paired often with economic opportunity.
