When It Rains It Pours... in the Form of Traffic Showing a 30% Spike Week on Week

LONDON--(Marketwire - Jun 21, 2012) - When the weather gets tough, the tough get travelling., the UK's leading online deals publisher, has found that traffic levels to its website by users seeking sunshine shot up by over 30% during the dreariest of wet weeks.

Having compared the week preceding 4th June, when the weather was gloriously hot and sunny, with the week of 11th June, when the UK was literally flooded with a month's worth of rain overnight, the website found that traffic rose significantly during the rain with Brits desperately seeking sunshine.

"The surge in traffic levels is clear confirmation that travel is the UK's answer to grey skies and gloom. We don't wallow in our wet gear waiting for the gloom to settle, we get searching for sunnier climes and scorching hot beach destinations," says Nadine Hallak, travel expert for

Cheapflights also took the time to find out which destinations were most favoured in bad weather and found that travellers are willing stretch their Sterling all the way to India, the Philippines and closer to home in Turkey. The usual European culprits like Spain and Portugal didn't feature within the top four searches, funnily enough, as Brits appeared to target destinations with higher temperatures.

Here we explore the top choices for making the great escape from the rain:

Mumbai, India -- a scorching 31% rise week on week: It can be chaotic and overwhelming, but this city is rich in history, culture and sunshine. Visitors can take boat trips to Elephanta Island to see holy temples carved from rock dating from as far back as 450 AD. A day trip to the Buddhist Kanheri Caves is also a must. Alternatively, those who prefer to forgo culture for glamour will find a rich nightlife of wonderful restaurants, bars and clubs. Return flights start from £384 per person.

Athens, Greece -- 16% rise week on week: Named after Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, the city of Athens is packed with historic sights not to be missed. A visit to the Acropolis and the Parthenon is almost a prerequisite of a visit to Athens. Don't miss out on Athens' vibrant urban centre though -- walk the winding streets, take a coffee break in one of the many pavement cafés, visit the bars and soak up the atmosphere of modern-day Athens. Return flights start from £158 per person.

Dalaman, Turkey -- 13% rise week on week: Idyllically situated between snow-tipped mountains and turquoise waters, some of the most striking ruins can be seen in nearby Fethiye. Visitors to Olu Deniz can enjoy the best of Turkey's pristine white beaches. The port city of Marmaris, renowned for its vibrant nightlife and world-famous yacht marina, is also a popular stop-over. Return flights start from £124 per person.

Manila, The Philippines -- 12% rise week on week: The first thing that visitors notice is that the city doesn't have a centre, instead there are remnants of the walled Intramuros. Built in the 16th century by the Spaniards, this 'city within a city' is Manila's oldest district and its traditional city centre that once housed churches, schools and hospitals. If you only have time to visit one museum then make sure it's the Ayala Museum, which provides the best examples of Filipino art and culture. Return flights start from £499 per person.
