Cheers! Hydro Ottawa Celebrates LCBO's Commitment to Conservation

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 23, 2012) - Hydro Ottawa is proud to present LCBO with this month's Companies for Conservation award for taking significant strides to green its operations.

Recently, LCBO replaced more than 1,000 inefficient lights at its Ottawa warehouse facility, cutting electricity costs by approximately 30 percent. LCBO received $62,000 in incentives for this lighting upgrade through the provincial saveONenergy Retrofit Program, which is administered locally by Hydro Ottawa. This province-wide initiative provides partial funding to commercial customers who complete energy efficiency retrofit projects.

"LCBO has shown it is a responsible corporate citizen by continuously improving the energy efficiency of its stores and distribution centres," said Roger Marsh, Hydro Ottawa's Chief Energy Management Officer. "It's my hope that these positive actions serve as an inspiration for others looking to reduce their operational costs and their environmental footprint."

As one of the largest alcohol beverage retailers in the world, LCBO uses its influence to drive change. LCBO was one of the first retailers in Ontario to eliminate plastic bags and offer reusable shopping bags. It also helped implement a comprehensive waste management and container recycling program developed by government with a 92 percent diversion rate.

"Environmental initiatives are now part of our industry standards. We look to raise the bar and set new performance standards while keeping our customers, communities and environment in mind," said George Soleas, Senior Vice President, Logistics and Quality Assurance at LCBO.

Hydro Ottawa's Companies for Conservation program recognizes local companies and organizations for their innovative conservation projects. LCBO joins a growing list of business leaders who have also been recognized for their green achievements. Past recipients include: Giant Tiger, the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa.
