Chick-fil-A to Open First Free-Standing Restaurant in Upland Oct. 20

First 100 Adults in Line at the New Restaurant to Receive Free Chick-fil-A for a Year

UPLAND, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 19, 2005 -- Chick-fil-A, Inc. will celebrate the opening of its first free-standing Chick-fil-A restaurant in Upland on Oct. 20 by giving away nearly $26,000 in free food in 15 minutes to the first 100 adults in line at the new restaurant located at 1949 North Campus Ave. (Campus & 210).

Festivities include awarding a one-year supply of free Chick-fil-A combo meals (52 coupons) on Oct. 20 to each of the first 100 adults, age 18 and older, in line by 6 a.m. Customers may line up starting 24 hours in advance at the new restaurant. The restaurant will officially open for business after the event at 6:30 a.m.

"We've given away more than $2.5 million in free Chick-fil-A food since we started the 'First 100 Fans' promotion two years ago. This event has attracted Chick-fil-A raving fans from across the country to camp out in all types of weather conditions to be among the first 100 in line," said Dan Cathy, son of the chain's founder, Truett Cathy. Chick-fil-A launched its 'First 100 Fans' promotion in Oct. 2003 in Phoenix and has continued the event at every free-standing and in-line restaurant grand opening across the country. Even the most extreme weather conditions haven't kept Chick-fil-A raving fans away. In virtually every region of the country, including California, groups of dedicated Chick-fil-A customers have attended multiple openings, with some raving fans camping out eight or more times. The event has attracted campers who have never tried Chick-fil-A.

The new location in Upland will be the 10th free-standing Chick-fil-A restaurant in California to open since Chick-fil-A launched an aggressive expansion into the state, opening its first free-standing restaurant in Chino Hills almost two years ago. The company has targeted California to open approximately 75 free-standing restaurants within the next five years, including locations planned for Santa Ana, Long Beach and Murieta in the coming months.

Bryce Donaldson, who has worked for Chick-fil-A for seven years, has been selected to operate the new Upland restaurant. He and his wife Bethany are relocating from Columbus, Ga., to operate the new location.

The new restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. and features its signature Chicken Sandwich which consists of a solid boneless breast of chicken pressure cooked in peanut oil. Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A is the nation's second-largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain with more than 1,220 restaurants in 38 states and Washington D.C. The chain expects to build more than 77 locations this year, including 60 free-standing units such as the one in Upland.
