Chieftain Prepares Tulsequah Chief for Mine Construction; Interim Water Treatment Plant Nears Completion

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 4, 2011) - Chieftain Metals Inc. ("Chieftain" or the "Company") (TSX:CFB) announces commencement of initial construction and site preparation at the Tulsequah Chief mine site. The construction program will consist of the removal of historic Potential Acid Generating (PAG) rock to a containment area one kilometer from the mine site. The work achieves two main objectives - containment of PAG drainage, and positioning Chieftain to begin plant site grading and foundation construction in the summer of 2012. Chieftain is fully permitted to begin this winter work program immediately and is expecting completion by April 2012.

The Interim Water Treatment Plant is entering the final phase of construction at the Tulsequah Chief mine site. The project is 85% complete; remaining on schedule and on budget with a targeted completion date of November 2011.

Mr. Victor Wyprysky, President and CEO, commented, "I am pleased with the team's ability to execute with speed, accuracy and efficiency. The winter work program will put us ahead of schedule so we can hit the ground running with full mine construction in the spring."
