Children, Families and Communities Across Canada Benefit From Day of Volunteering

Deloitte employees donate Saturday to lend a hand in their communities

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 25, 2009) - In a major mobilization of people power and goodwill, tomorrow more than 4700 people from the Deloitte family across Canada will make community their business. They will donate their time, skills and experience to help make a difference in the lives of children, senior citizens, people with disabilities, new immigrants, abused women, and many more in the communities in which they live and work.

It's called Impact Day, held annually at Deloitte and now in its fifth year. This national volunteer service day celebrates the year-round commitment of the firm and its people to workplace volunteerism, community involvement, and more simply - making a difference in the lives of others.

Deloitte volunteers, along with families and friends, will help thousands of people through work with hundreds of community-based organizations nationwide. Some of these are one-day projects, such as serving food to the homeless or spending time with seniors at nursing homes. Many others are kick-offs or continuations of longer-term endeavors, such as mentoring new immigrants. Impact Day can be a catalyst to new relationships with community organizations or can provide opportunities for Deloitte people to draw attention to their personal community involvements, such as working with children at a Boys and Girls Club.

The following words from one of the community organizations Deloitte people worked with last year provide a shining example of why Impact Day is so important:

"It is difficult to measure and quantify the impact a day like this can have. New-found confidence and self-esteem...that helps a newcomer land a job in their field can impact a family for years to come."

Deloitte Partner and Impact Day leader, Eric Girard says, "I'm incredibly proud of the people of Deloitte and their families and friends who are donating their Saturday to have an impact in their communities. In this difficult economy, community agencies that support people need help more than ever." He adds "Showing our commitment to the communities in which we work and live is one of the core values that the people of Deloitte live by every day."
