Christie Clinic in Champaign, Illinois Goes Live With New Patient Web Portal That Allows Secure 24/7 Access to Health Records

SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 13, 2006 -- The patients of Christie Clinic in Champaign, Ill. have a new, more convenient way to manage their healthcare needs, thanks to a web portal that allows them 24-hour access to many of their health records. The site is the first such portal designed by InteGreat, a leading provider of electronic health record (EHR) systems for physician group practices.

Patients can perform a number of tasks from home that they could once accomplish only at the clinic. For instance, after logging on with a secure password, they can view any scheduled appointment, request future appointments and check various health indicators, such as their last recorded blood pressure (BP) reading from a previous check-up. In fact, they can graph their multiple BP readings through an application on the site.

With six clinic locations, a sleep center, a cancer center and 40 clinical departments, Christie Clinic is one of Illinois' largest physician-owned, multi-specialty group medical practices. Founded in 1929, it is staffed by more than 80 physicians in approximately 35 specialties.

InteGreat, which designed and created Christie Clinic's EHR system, also designed and implemented the portal in five months. Since going live, approximately 600 patients have enrolled and, Lane says, "quite a few every week" are signing up. The clinic publicizes the portal at all locations and builds further awareness through print and radio advertising.

The secure sign-up process is simple. A patient completes an application, either in the clinic or at home (the website offers printable forms), and submits it in person at the clinic. At this point, the patient must show a photo ID for verification. After that, the clinic mails the patient his or her secure sign-on, which allows access to the portal. "This is a step that enhances security," says Lane. "We will not send out confidential information to an e-mail address."

Future versions of the portal will allow for even more services. For instance, patients will be able to check radiology and lab results, update medical records, request prescriptions and electronically create their family history, which shows past occurrences of diseases such as cancer and diabetes in family members. This feature will eliminate the tedious process of filling out lengthy medical forms before seeing a doctor, and the history will "follow" the patient to all future appointments, no matter which doctor he or she is seeing.
