Christmas Cards Company The Gallery Collection Picks Controversial Winner for $10,000 Scholarship Contest

RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ--(Marketwire - March 23, 2010) -  Prudent Publishing's The Gallery Collection, one of the nation's leading publishers of Christmas cards, announced Lauren Ondreko of Friendswood, Texas as the winner of its 3rd Annual Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest.

Lauren, a senior at Friendswood High School who plans on attending college to study elementary education, submitted a fun and whimsical design on white loose-leaf lined paper. When asked about her reaction to the good news, she responded, "I feel very grateful and fortunate! My design was something I kind of doodled one day in biology class, so finding out I had won was an extremely joyful experience." Lauren's creation can be viewed on the Greeting Cards Winners and Finalists page on The Gallery Collection's website.

After the Christmas cards company announced the decision to the 7,893 other entrants there was an immediate reaction. Some contestants and their parents raised concerns that the judging criteria was disregarded in choosing the winning design because they felt it wasn't business appropriate or executed in a quality manner.

In response to these concerns, H.L. DeVore, Chief Marketing Officer of The Gallery Collection, commented, "Above all criteria, our judges -- who happen to be professional greeting card designers -- look for originality that will translate well when we convert the winning entry into an actual greeting card design. While Lauren did submit an unorthodox entry on lined notebook paper, her design is fresh and cheerful and something our judges believe we can make into an appealing holiday greeting card."

The winning design stirred up so much unexpected controversy that the Christmas cards company decided to post a blog entry revealing some more insights on how its annual greeting card scholarship contest is judged. This insider's look at the judging can be read on The Gallery Collection's blog. More blog posts, insights, and information are anticipated to aid students and educators in the weeks ahead.

On March 17, The Gallery Collection officially launched its 4th Annual Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest. In addition to giving away a $10,000 scholarship, the school of the student with the winning design will also receive a $1,000 prize. The contest is open to high school, college, and university students that are 14 years of age or older at the time of entry. To review the official scholarship rules and to submit an entry, visit:
