CIDA:Canada announces additional support for Rights & Democracy

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 25, 2005) - International Cooperation Minister Aileen Carroll and Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew today announced that Canada will increase its allocation by close to $ 3 million per year over the next three years to the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development, also know as Rights & Democracy.

"Canada is committed to strengthening and promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law to help people live in free and open societies," said Minister Carroll. "Rights & Democracy has an impressive record of promoting good governance and sustainable development, and the Government of Canada is proud to support this work."

The additional funds will support programming in priority areas such as globalization, women's rights, indigenous rights and cross-thematic programs. The increase will also be used to fund partnerships with key international and Canadian organizations.

"The work of Rights & Democracy, both in Canada and abroad, reflects Canadian foreign policy priorities and values," stated Minister Pettigrew. "This organization is one of the Government of Canada's key partners. We are pleased to provide it with this financial support, which will allow it to continue to foster improved dialogue between governments and non-governmental organizations in Canada and throughout the world."

Rights & Democracy is primarily financed by the Government of Canada through the International Assistance Envelope. The increase announced today is consistent with the continued Government of Canada prioritization of human rights and democratic development in developing countries.
