CIDA: Canada Supports Earthquake Relief Work in Pakistan by Brantford-Based Organization

BRANTFORD, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 10, 2005) - Lloyd St. Amand, Member of Parliament for Brant today announced on behalf of the Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will provide $190,000 to support earthquake relief work in Pakistan by Brantford-based Canadian Relief Foundation.

"The Canadian Relief Foundation must be applauded for their initiative and deep sense of compassion for so quickly mobilizing and responding to this tragedy," Mr. St. Amand said. "I am pleased that the Canadian government is able to support and amplify the valuable work being done by the Foundation."

The CIDA grant would enable the Canadian Relief Foundation to establish mobile hospitals and provide medicine and health-related relief supplies in earthquake-affected areas. The mobile hospitals will be staffed, initially, by volunteer professionals from Canada, some of whom are of Pakistani origin and are familiar with the local language and customs.

The Foundation has raised at least $75,000 from its own constituency in support of the project. In addition, they have received in kind contributions valued at over $3.5 million. It has also received approximately $26,000 in in kind support (for a mobile hospital tent) from Mercy-USA for its operations in Pakistan.

"Canada is working closely with other donors, international organizations, and Canadian NGOs to continue to respond to ongoing needs in a timely, appropriate, and effective manner," Minister Carroll said. "We are matching the generosity of Canadians, dollar-for-dollar. This has been a great success."

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
