CIDA: Canada to Support Global Education Work of Waterloo-Based Organization

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 5, 2005) - The Honourable Andrew Telegdi, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo, on behalf of the Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will provide $39,000 to the Foundation for International Development Assistance to undertake global education work.

"I am pleased to see that a Waterloo-based organization has been successful in participating in this initiative," Mr. Telegdi said. "Ensuring that our students get an opportunity to understand the challenges that face developing countries is vital work and the foundation is to be commended in undertaking it."

The project aims to engage Canadian students in understanding the complex dimensions of development in Haiti and to assist teachers in integrating a global perspective in teaching. It will support the operation of a multimedia web-based resource called Radyo Konesans Radio. It is designed as an interactive magazine/radio broadcast that explores development issues in Haiti. A comprehensive teachers' kit for use in grades 10-12 social studies courses will complement the web-based resource.

This is one of many initiatives funded across the country under CIDA's Global Classroom Initiative, a program that supports the development and delivery of school-based global education resources and activities in Canadian schools.

"Generating awareness among Canadian youth about global issues is fundamental to Canada's development efforts," Minister Carroll said. "I am pleased to see that the Foundation is working with CIDA to inform and educate youth to help them become better global citizens."

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
