CIDA/Canada Unveils its National Report on the G8 Africa Action Plan

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 28, 2005) - Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew and International Cooperation Minister Aileen Carroll today unveiled a national report that highlights Canada's leadership and multifaceted commitments to Africa's development agenda. Canada's Contribution to the G8 Africa Action Plan: Consolidating Africa's Place at the Centre of Canada's International Cooperation Agenda reviews Canada's implementation of the G8 Africa Action Plan (AAP) launched at the G8 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, in response to the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).

"The report demonstrates the broad range of initiatives across the Government of Canada in support of the NEPAD agenda. In addition to development assistance, it includes support for achieving peace and security through initiatives such as assisting the African Union Mission in Darfur, and debt relief," said Minister Pettigrew.

"Canada has taken a leadership role in supporting NEPAD and the G8 Africa Action Plan in order to help Africans with their objectives for a better future," Minister Carroll said. "As the report demonstrates, these initiatives have had positive outcomes and we will continue to support an African-led development process to put the continent on the path to sustainable development."

The report touches on a wide range of issues and outlines the whole-of-government approach Canada has adopted to mobilize departments across the federal government as well as organizations from the volunteer and private sectors. Canadian aid to the continent will double by 2008-2009 from its 2003-2004 level.

In Kananaskis, Canada launched its flagship program, the $500-million Canada Fund for Africa.
