CIDA Increases Support for Canadian Partners

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 18, 2005) - The Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is increasing the budget in support of Canadian partners working in international development. The increase of $147.7 million to previously planned spending is over five years and brings the Canadian Partnership Branch budget to its highest levels in a decade. Canadian Partnership programs support grassroots efforts to collaborate with local organizations in developing countries in their efforts to reduce poverty

In addition, CIDA is establishing the Canadian Partnership Fund. This follows the review of the NGO Project Facility (NFP) and the Environment and Sustainable Development Program (ESDP) evaluation report. The Canadian Partnership Fund, which consolidates the NPF and the ESDP, will have an annual budget of $15 million and be operational in February 2006.

"We have gained valuable information from the recently completed evaluation report of the NPF and ESD programs, which included broad consultations with our Canadian partners in development," said Minister Carroll. "I am confident to move forward with this new initiative which, along with the increased funding, will ensure that our partners can continue to deliver aid effectively and achieve real results."

Thirteen consultation sessions will take place across the country to give partners an opportunity to provide input and discuss various components of the new fund including possible eligibility criteria. Proposals submitted for funding consideration will have to be aligned with at least one of the five sector priorities of Canada's International Policy Statement: basic education, private - sector development, governance, health and environment sustainability - with gender equality being a cross-cutting theme.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 Federal Budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
