Citizens Make Case to Ontario Government

Presentation to Ministry of Energy focuses on securing the future of the Bruce site

BRUCE COUNTY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 12, 2008) - Citizens for Bruce C today made a presentation to the Ontario Ministry of Energy stating their case to keep the new build option at Bruce open, while encouraging the government to make a commitment to the security of the Bruce site. The committee also challenged recent media reports that suggest the decision is between the Bruce and Darlington sites. The group believes an announcement by government later this month can be a win for both communities.

Doug Storrey, Kincardine businessman and Co-chair of Citizens for Bruce C, said, "Both communities can win in this decision because security of both nuclear sites means the security of good jobs and long-term investment in both communities. We maintain the Bruce site is the best site for new build but not the only site."

As Bruce Power stated in 2004, the base case for new build at Bruce is an alternative to the refurbishment of the Bruce B units, securing 6,300 MW from the site. However, Environmental Assessment planning will allow for additional generation beyond that, which is an option for the province and Bruce Power that could be available in the future.

"This campaign has always viewed new build as one way of securing the future of the Bruce site. A decision by government that will maintain the new build option is a victory for us. However, we believe the government must make a commitment to the site as it provides nearly 45% of the baseload nuclear in Ontario," said Doug Mullaly, President of the Bruce Power Pensioners Association and a Co-Chair of the Citizens for Bruce C.

"Many have stated that transmission from Bruce is an issue. However, the reality is that when new build is considered as an alternative to the refurbishment of Bruce B, the Bruce site actually has an advantage," said Dave Trumble, Co- Chair of the Citizens for Bruce C and President of the Grey-Bruce Labour Council.
