Citus Data Scales Out PostgreSQL to Power CloudFlare's Real-Time Customer Analytics on Hundreds of Terabytes of Data

CloudFlare Uses CitusDB for All Analytics and Business Intelligence on Activity Data From More Than 4 Million Websites

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 29, 2015) - Citus Data, creator of solutions that scale out PostgreSQL for real-time big data, today announced that CloudFlare has standardized on the CitusDB database to power analytics and business intelligence (BI) on hundreds of terabytes of activity data collected from more than 4 million websites. CloudFlare's network handles more than 5 percent of global Internet requests, and every month more than 2 billion people experience a faster, safer, better Internet. With CitusDB, CloudFlare has achieved real-time data ingest and sub-second queries across billions of rows of data. CitusDB also required one-fifth as much development effort compared to alternatives offering fewer benefits and reduced the cost of going into production by 85 percent.

  • More than 5 percent of global web requests flow through CloudFlare's network. About 4 million websites enjoy significant performance gains and protection from cyberattacks.
  • CitusDB is an extension of the latest version of PostgreSQL, enabling CloudFlare to work with its existing Postgres extensions without any changes or modifications.
  • The CloudFlare cluster runs on commodity servers and houses 100 TB of data using approximately 1 million shards, with each shard replicated to multiple machines. CitusDB provides high availability by enabling automatic failover between replicas, even during queries.
  • Queries against the cluster take between 25 milliseconds and two seconds, depending on whether some or all of the data is available in page cache.
  • Increasing the capacity of the cluster is as simple as adding additional commodity servers and using CitusDB-provided tools to rebalance the shards across the cluster.
  • CloudFlare analytics now provides website owners with information on millions of site visits and potential threats, including request counts, country of origin, traffic type, threat type and much more, thanks to CitusDB. CloudFlare also gained cross-customer visibility, aggregating non-user identifying data from millions of customers and performing complex queries with response times measured in seconds to a few minutes.

Albert Strasheim, Systems Engineer at CloudFlare
"CitusDB maintains compatibility with the latest version of PostgreSQL instead of forking the code base like other vendors. This allowed us to leverage our existing work and expertise, including several Postgres extensions. Because CitusDB enables both real-time data ingest and sub-second queries across billions of rows, it quickly became the backbone of our customer analytics solution."

Umur Cubukcu, CEO and Co-founder of Citus Data
"CitusDB is both an operational and analytics database that enables companies like CloudFlare to shard their Postgres database across a cluster of commodity servers and leverage massive parallel processing to distribute queries across the cluster for real-time analytics. As a result, these companies are able to grow their business infrastructures cost effectively and reliably while achieving the performance they need to meet the data analytics requirements of their customers. They also benefit from the large and growing pool of Postgres talent and expertise."
