BEACONSFIELD, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Sept. 2, 2015) - The Mayor of Beaconsfield, Georges Bourelle, is pleased to announce that Beaconsfield residents have reduced the tonnage of waste sent to landfill sites over the first six months of 2015 by 28%, compared to the same period of 2014.
"This fact is all the more remarkable because it places us in the category of cities producing the least waste per capita on the Island of Montreal. This is a complete reversal of position because in 2013 our City was the second highest producer," affirmed mayor Bourelle.
Several initiatives resulting from the work of a committee of citizens, experts and pilot project participants have been implemented by the City to reduce the tonnage of waste produced in Beaconsfield.
"We are doing better, using new technology without increasing our costs, allowing us to do much more and to significantly increase the recycling and reuse of materials recovered," explained the mayor.
In less than two years, the results are significant. In 2014, the community reduced the tonnage of waste sent to landfill by almost 10%, or 662 tonnes, compared to 2013. The reduction in the first six months of 2015 is more impressive, with 899 fewer tonnes than the same period last year.
Improvements in collection allowed during the first six months of 2015:
- Recovery of four times more loads of branches this spring
- Delivery or four times more wood chips to residents (as much material diverted from landfill)
- Diversion from landfill of 220 tonnes of bulky items collected door to door
- Recovery of 595 tonnes of green residue (compared to 72 tonnes in 2014)

Open House and Bin Orders
Citizens are cordially invited to the next Beaconsfield waste management open house, which will be held on Tuesday, September 15 in the Herb Linder Annex, 303 Beaconsfield Blvd., from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The new collection equipment, and technological improvements used during the pilot project will be on display to help residents understand the use of the RFID system for the garbage bins. The system installed in the truck allows for the automatic reading of the RFID tag in each bin, the identification of any problems associated with collection of a bin at an address, and if necessary the ability to take a photo of the problem observed. The mechanized garbage collection and incentive tariff are key components of the Beaconsfield Waste Reduction Strategy.
Residents are reminded that they must choose the format of their new garbage bin (MINI - 120 litres, STANDARD - 240 litres or HEFTY -360 litres) by September 25. The new bins will be on display at the Open House on September 15. Residents can also choose their bin on the City website at beaconsfield.ca or by calling 1 855 447-2225.
