City of Montreal/Last Chance to Celebrate Les Week-ends du monde au parc Jean-Drapeau: Fiesta Latina August 10 to August 13

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 10, 2006) - The Latin-America Celebration continues this weekend at Ile Notre-Dame as part of Les Week-ends du monde, which were held this summer at parc Jean-Drapeau. Thursday, August 10 to Sunday, August 13, discover the treasures, flavours and colours of several Latin-American countries during the last weekend of Les week-ends du monde, featuring Chile, Bolivia, Mexico and Guatemala.

The Latin-American Festival closes with Chile on Thursday, August 10. Featured will be music from the Andes with Atacamenos, folk dancing with the Arco Iris troupe, which is made up of children and teens 10 to 20 years old, as well as Chilean music with Trio Fogon.

On Friday, August 11, Bolivia takes over with a colourful show featuring Bolivian folk dancing, music and traditional charangos and tarkas sounds with Kollasuyo, Nuevo Amanecer and Witsus. The groups Ayni and Eco Andino will also be part of this show featuring traditional music from the Andes and Bolivia.

Mexico day will feature Don Jost Figueroa, third generation Mariachis Figueroa, from Mexico, mariachis band Sol de mi tierra, and traditional dance troupe Los Pequenos.

Guatemala will close Les Week-ends du monde on Sunday, August 13. To end the fiesta Latina, organizers have invited several international and local groups for an electrifying evening. Featured are: Montreal singer of Cuban origin Qbanito with his popular hit "Maria", and Puerto Rican duo Yaga & Mackie, two artists who have made reggaeton music popular. Guatemalan folk group Marimba Maya will play the marimba, an ancestral sculpted wood instrument similar to the xylophone. Grupo Tikal, made up of a dozen dancers in traditional costumes will perform on stage Guatemalan folk dance themes with the marimba. Reggaeton, hip hop and Latin music will be featured with DJ Blaze, the young sensation who has recently won the title of best DJ at the Reggaeton Championships Calientissimo VIII at the Club Soda, Crazy Boy and DJ Rico.

General admission is $5 on Thursday, August 10 and Saturday, August 12; $10 on Friday, August 11; and $15 on Sunday, August 13.

Recycling at Les Week-ends du monde

For the first time, Les Week-ends du monde will be recycling, in cooperation with the Consortium Echo-logique and Ville de Montreal. Participants and merchants are doing their part for the environment, and have installed 50 recycling bins on the site, to give a second life to recyclable containers and packaging.

Access to the site

Montrealers are urged to use public transportation to and from the site. Use the Jean-Drapeau (Ile Sainte-Helene) station on the yellow line. Shuttle bus No. 167 takes visitors from the Metro station to the site.
