City of Redondo Beach Deploys Xirrus Wi-Fi to Ensure Reliable Service in Public and Staff Facilities

Southern California Coastal City Selects Xirrus Wi-Fi to Optimize Staff Operations and Provide a More Dynamic Experience to Guests and Residents

THOUSAND OAKS, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 26, 2014) - Xirrus, the leader in high-performance wireless networks, today announced that the City of Redondo Beach, located 20 miles outside of Los Angeles, has deployed Xirrus' next-generation Wi-Fi across various community areas. The Xirrus network enables IT administrators to significantly reduce the amount of time spent troubleshooting and managing the network.

"The network has simply worked since day one, and it continues to be very reliable," said Christopher Benson, IT technology director at City of Redondo Beach. "My team has not had to dedicate any time troubleshooting or fixing issues with the network, and they can simply focus on basic maintenance. For a department with our staffing level, that's a big plus."

City officials have observed a reduced number of complaints from the public regarding access to and connectivity of the network since the Xirrus system was installed. They also noted an increase in Wi-Fi usage by the public and staff due to the reliability and speed of the network. Users no longer become frustrated and log off after experiencing slow speeds, as with the previous network.

Xirrus Application Control, integrated in all Xirrus Wi-Fi products, provides the City of Redondo Beach visibility into application usage to determine how the network is being used by constituents, partners and city staff. One area of focus for the City is ensuring that their network is not used for illegal downloads. With Xirrus, IT administrators can limit access to specific applications and thereby limit the City's risk and liability.

The two public libraries offer free Wi-Fi access to the public, and despite being the highest-density areas of the city's network, the performance has been seamless. Redondo Beach also offers Wi-Fi access to guests attending entertainment or corporate events at the performing arts center. Lastly, the City utilizes outdoor units to cover patio areas and the loading dock at the performing arts center to facilitate deliveries and logistics. Redondo Beach IT staff deployed 82 Xirrus APs and Arrays in total, including two-radio, four-radio, and eight-radio solutions.

"The deployment in the City of Redondo Beach exemplifies what Xirrus does best," said Bruce Miller, vice president of product marketing, Xirrus. "The design incorporated multiple indoor and outdoor sites, with various levels of density. The reliability and upgradability of the network, combined with the power of Application Control, made Xirrus a natural fit for City of Redondo Beach."
