City Wide Food Drive Celebrates 6 Years of Families Helping Families

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 14, 2010) - 2010 marks the 6th anniversary of the City-Wide Food Drive. This tradition has raised more than 1.8 million pounds of food for the Calgary Food Bank.

In 2009 demand at the Calgary Food Bank increased by 40% and 124,713 Calgarians came to the Food Bank. 41% of those were children. This year we are serving 15% more people. Now more than ever hunger affects someone you know.

During last year's City Wide Food Drive, the 358,251 pounds of food were donated were distributed through 2,487 emergency food hampers to feed 9,948 people.

Leading up to this weekend's food drive, approximately 7,000 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be leaving food donation bags at more than 370,000 Calgary homes. Calgarians can donate by simply placing non-perishable food items into a food donation bag and leaving it on the doorstep before 9 am on Saturday, September 18.

On Saturday September 18, volunteers will pick up donations by 1 pm.

A number of transportation companies are donating their services to haul donated food to the Calgary Food Bank. Cash and corporate donations are also welcomed through www.calgaryfoodbank.com

Calgary's largest annual food drive is an opportunity for families to help families in need.
