Civic funeral service: Montreal pays a last tribute to Captain Marcel Marleau

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 23, 2006) - The Mayor of Montreal, Gerald Tremblay, is deeply saddened by the death of Captain Marcel Marleau, firefighter at the Service de securite incendie de Montreal, and invites Montrealers to pay their last respects to a devoted firefighter. There will be three lying-in-state ceremonies at the hall of honour of City Hall at 275 Notre-Dame Street East, on Tuesday, January 24, and Wednesday, January 25, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., as well as Thursday, January 26, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

"Captain Marleau was highly regarded by all his colleagues. His courage and sense of duty have often been acknowledged throughout his career. He leaves to mourn his wife, Chantelle Ball, and his two children, Philippe and Patrick Marleau, friends and colleagues who are deeply shaken by this loss," said Mayor Tremblay.

Captain Marleau died on Saturday, January 21, at the age of 47. He lost his life in an apartment building blaze at 14295 Langelier Boulevard in the borough of Montreal-Nord. He had been a firefighter at the Service de securite incendie de Montreal since 1978.

A civic funeral service will be held on January 26, 2006, at 11 a.m., at Notre-Dame Basilica, 100 Notre-Dame Street West, in Montreal. A procession of firefighters will leave at 9 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2006, from the intersection of Notre-Dame and Gosford streets.

Donations may be made to the Federation quebecoise de l'autisme, Lanaudiere region, 200 de Salaberry Street, Joliette, or to the Fondation des grands brules de l'Hotel-Dieu de Montreal, 340 Saint-Urbain Street.
