CKNW Orphans' Fund Host 40th Annual Picnic for Challenged Children

3,000 Lower Mainland Children Attend PNE's Playland for Memorable Day of Fun, Rides and Games

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 7, 2012) - For the last 40 years, the CKNW Orphans' Fund has hosted a collective 90,000 challenged children at the annual summer picnic event. Yesterday, June 6th provided a day of fun for 3,000 children facing a variety of physical, mental, social and behavioural challenges.

"This is a day where children can be just children. They can forget about what current issues they are challenged with and just have a great time," says Jen Schaeffers, Executive Director, CKNW Orphans' Fund. "These are children that wouldn't have the opportunity to attend Playland like many others, due to their financial limitations or current special needs that make it too much of a challenge for their parents or caregivers to take them for a regular day at the park."

In addition to the rides, face painting and food the children experienced, there was a host of entertainment, including musical guests and local Vancouver mascots FIN (Vancouver Canucks), Ronald McDonald, Leo the Lion (BC Lions). This special day was made possible thanks to generous donors and corporate partners of the CKNW Orphans' Fund including London Drugs and Clearly Contacts.

"London Drugs is proud to support the CKNW Orphans' Fund annual picnic for challenged children," said Wynne Powell, London Drugs president and CEO. "We hope all of the children and their families had a fantastic day."

As children left the park they were treated with a surprise from sponsor Clearly Contacts who gave away over 3,000 pairs of sunglasses and 3,000 gift cards for a free pair of prescription eyeglasses.
